
Jazmine Laura Sullivan was born and brought up from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Her mother Pam is a former vocalist for the backup band of Philadelphia International Records. When she was five Her father was named as one of the cities' Historic Strawberry Mansion curator. The family then moved into this historic building. She was a graduate in 2005 of Philadelphia High School for the Creative and Performing Arts where she was the vocal music instructor. Sullivan started singing in children's choir as a contralto before joining the adult chorus a couple of years afterwards. Sullivan was not exposed to secular music. She recalls when she was in her 11th year when someone was requesting her to sing for solos in church. But, she wasn't fully ready. In the following year, McDonald's held a contest that was open to children living in cities. I was selected to perform "Accept What God Allows" in the show Showtime at the Apollo. And the public was extremely supportive. She sang along with Stevie Wonder at his grandson's birthday at the age of thirteen. Sullivan signed her first contract to Jive Records when she was 15. The label recorded her an entire album. However, the album never came out. Sullivan was eventually dropped out of the company. She maintained a working relationship with Missy Elliott she produced some of the songs on her debut album, such as the brash single "Backstabbers" composed by Timbaland and composed by Elliott.
